How to Prepare the Interior of Your Home for Winter

Hey guys, Your Home Girl here!  I am so glad to be sharing with you guys again— here is a list of things I have compiled over the years
that really helps prep your home for those famous frigid Michigan months.

I hope you can use these action items, it also helps if you break them up over a few weekends so it doesn't feel so overwhelming.

🏠 How to Prepare the Interior of Your Home for Winter

1. Check your furnace

  • Replace the furnace filter.
  • Have your furnace serviced if it hasn’t been recently.
  • Make sure all vents and registers are open and unobstructed.
  • Test your thermostat and consider replacing the batteries.

2. Seal up drafts

  • Check around windows and doors for cold air.
  • Replace worn weatherstripping.
  • Re-caulk gaps around windows if needed.
  • Don’t forget doors leading to garages, basements, and attics.

3. Protect your pipes

  • Insulate exposed plumbing in unheated areas.
  • Keep your home heated even when you're away.
  • During extreme cold, open cabinet doors beneath sinks—especially on exterior walls—to allow warm air around the pipes.
  • Know where your main water shutoff is located before you need it.

4. Check your smoke & carbon monoxide detectors

  • Test every detector.
  • Replace batteries if needed.
  • Make sure you have a carbon monoxide detector near sleeping areas.
  • Check the expiration date/age of the units.

5. Inspect your fireplace or wood stove

  • If you use a fireplace, have the chimney inspected and cleaned as recommended.
  • Make sure the damper opens and closes properly.
  • Keep anything flammable well away from the fireplace.

6. Take care of your humidifier

Winter air can get very dry. If you have a whole-house humidifier, clean it and replace the filter/pad as needed. Proper humidity can
make your home more comfortable and help protect wood floors and furnishings.

7. Prevent frozen pipes

During those brutal Michigan cold snaps, leave interior doors open so warm air can circulate. If a faucet is served by vulnerable plumbing, a small trickle of water can sometimes help prevent freezing.

8. Check your attic access

Make sure the attic hatch is properly insulated and sealed. Heat escaping through the attic can contribute to ice dams and higher heating bills.

9. Reverse your ceiling fans

If your ceiling fans have a reverse setting, run them clockwise at low speed during the heating season. This helps push warm air that has risen toward the ceiling back into the living space.

10. Do a quick winter safety check

Keep flashlights, batteries, blankets, and basic emergency supplies somewhere accessible. A winter power outage is much easier to deal with when you aren't searching for everything in the dark.

Final Words

Preparing your home for winter doesn’t have to be overwhelming. By taking a few proactive steps now—from servicing your furnace and sealing drafts to protecting your pipes and checking important safety systems—you can help keep your home warm, safe, and efficient throughout Michigan’s coldest months.

A little preparation today can save you from costly repairs, unexpected emergencies, and unnecessary stress later. As temperatures begin to drop, use this checklist as a guide to ensure your home is ready for whatever winter brings.
